Subject: Scouting for Food - February and March
Parents,
Saturday morning, March 11th, the Troop will conduct the Scouting for Food Drive. We will go house-to-house and request (as well as collect) canned foods. The food will be donated to needy people through local community organizations.
The second part of the Food Drive will take place over the Presidents Day week off from school, February 20 - 24. Early one morning that week (the exact date to be determined shortly), we will take "care packages" of personal necessities to needy people in Roseville. A charitable group in Roseville serves breakfast daily to the homeless and others. We will meet up with them at their location, a church parking lot, for an hour.
Since we are using this event to teach the boys that people are in need of food in our communities, it is an opportunity to show that even in the suburbs there is hunger. And it's very close to us. There is a caveat, however, for parents. The Roseville group of people is largely homeless. If you do not want your child exposed to this reality, this isn't the part of Scouting for Food for you.
I don't believe there are any security concerns. The people are well-behaved and grateful for what they are provided. I believe they would be thrilled to see Boy Scouts in uniform providing them with practical items (socks, toothpaste, toothbrushes, lip balm, deodorant, etc.). Additionally, it is another teaching moment for the boys to learn about the phenomenon of homelessness in America.
We will be putting the care packages together as part of the weekly Troop meeting on February 9th. Look for another reminder e-mail about bringing and packaging the items. There also will be a SignUp Genius site.
Thanks,
