Parents,
I will be leading the Citizenship in the Nation Merit Badge class for Scouts who are First Class or above in rank. This is one of the Eagle required merit badges. Look for the Citizenship in the World Merit Badge class in the fall after Citizenship in the Nation is completed.
The days and time will be three Sundays from 2 - 3:30 p.m. And, since there is one requirement that calls for visits to the State Capitol and a National Historic Landmark, we'll need to do one Saturday class for 3 - 4 hours. This Saturday time allotment would be for the two visits and an on-site discussion afterwards (transporting yourself would be additional time).
The Sundays are: September 18th and October 16th and 23rd. The Saturday class is September 24th. The hour of the Saturday class hasn't been determined. I'd like to include a docent led tour, so I have to look into when they're available for our size group.
There also we be at least one individual meeting of your Scout and me, the counselor. I'd like to do these at our Thursday Troop meetings, but we'll have to see how that goes. If it's not possible to do at the weekly meetings, please remember we'll have to come up with an additional time slot - additional to the ones specified above.
Every meeting will require that each Scout does some research and writing beforehand. You can determine whether it be the internet or library research. I ask that the written work be typed, and you review it before it is submitted (for spelling, grammar, cogency and the Scout's inclusion of their individual thoughts/comments/conclusions). I am asking for a minimum amount of writing - a fully typed page is the expectation for each class session. There's a lot to research and discuss in this merit badge.
Please see http://www.scouting.org/filestore/Merit_Badge_ReqandRes/Citizenship_in_the_Nation.pdf for the merit badge notebook/publication. And let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks,
Tony Scott
