 | Glenn A. and Melinda W. Adams National Eagle Scout Service Project of the Year Award
|
The Golden Empire Council Advancement Committee met earlier this month to select the Council's candidate for the Glenn A. and Melinda W. Adams National Eagle Scout Service Project of the Year Award. The Committee evaluated five exemplary Eagle Scout Service Projects for project planning required, effort to develop the project, extent and character of the leadership provided by the Scout , extent of achievement of the planned result, including changes or modifications required to complete the project, project's impact on the beneficiary and/or on the community at large, originality of the project , scope of the work, time and materials contributed, and the level of skill employed to complete the project. Unfortunately the committee was only able to select one project from the 545 Scouts that earned the Rank of Eagle Scout in 2015. The winning entry belongs to Conner S. from the El Dorado District who planned and organized the construction of a concrete wheelchair ramp at the Folsom Sports Complex in Folsom, California. The project involved the demolition of two existing staircases and construction of one staircase for access to the batting cages and the construction of an Americans with Disabilities Act compliant 42 foot long, 32 inches high and 5 foot wide ramp with two level rest pads. This project took 3-1/2 years, 662 hours and many volunteers to complete due to the numerous permits, inspections and construction stages involved. The Risk Zone Driver's Pledge
- I will not text or talk on my phone while I am driving. Texting and talking take my eyes off the road, hands off the steering wheel, and my mind off what I am doing.
- I will put my phone in my backpack or in the glove box before I get behind the wheel. I will only check it when I have safely parked the vehicle.
- I will not become distracted by things going on inside and outside the vehicle. I will concentrate on my driving and my travel plans.
- I will not drive when I feel fatigued. I realize that when I am fatigued, I process information more slowly and less accurately and this impairs my ability to react in time to avoid accidents.
- I will arrange my schedule so that several days before a Boy Scout "driving trip," I will get a good night's sleep every night to avoid the cumulative effect of not getting enough sleep.
- I will make trip preparations far enough in advance so that last-minute preparations don't interfere with my rest.
- I will make travel plans that take into account my personal biological clock and only drive during the part of the day when I know I will be alert
- I will be smart about engaging in physical activities during Scouting outings and will make sure that I will be ready to drive alertly.
Consider having any adult driver take this pledge. It could save a Scout or Scouter's life! | |

National Youth Leader Training The NYLT course centers around the concepts of what a leader must BE, what they must KNOW, and what they must DO. The key elements are then taught with a clear focus on HOW TO. The skills come alive during the week as the patrol goes on a Quest for the Meaning of Leadership.
NYLT is a six-day course offered in 2 weekends. Content is delivered in a troop and patrol outdoor setting with an emphasis on immediate application of learning in a fun environment. Interconnecting concepts and work processes are introduced early, built upon, and aided by the use of memory aids, which allows participants to understand and employ the leadership skills much faster.
